A Little Review...
*PRINCIPLES WE CAN GATHER FROM OLD TESTAMENT GIVING*
It was proportionate to provision
It was done regularly
It was used to take care of God's people (doing His work, as well as, poor)
It was done as an act of faith
It was done in reflection of what had been provided
It was done with a heart of worship
It was done with an expectation of blessing
Not giving was considered robbery to God
*A FEW THINGS THE NEW TESTAMENT HAS TO SAY ABOUT POSSESSIONS*
· Our motive in giving is important...Matt. 6:1
· We can actively store up lasting treasures...Matt. 6:19-24
· There is much more to life than material goods...Luke 12:13-34
· You cannot be a disciple if you love things of this world more than Christ...Luke 14:25-35
Here are a few of the Scriptures we will be looking at this week, as well as, a few questions to get you thinking!
I Cor. 16:2--"On the first day of every week let each one of you put aside and save, as he may prosper, that no collections be made when I come"
II Cor. 8:3--"For I testify that according to their ability, and beyond their ability they gave of their own accord."
II Cor. 9:7--"Each one must do just as he has purposed in his heart, not grudgingly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver."
A Few Questions To Get You Thinking...
1. What principles can be gathered from the instructions given in I Cor. 16:2?
2. Are you giving according to your ability? (II Cor. 8:3)
3. What would you consider giving "beyond your ability"? (II Cor. 8:3)
4. Have you ever given in a way that was contrary to II Cor. 9:7? In what way?
5. Why is it important to God for us to be cheerful givers?
Consider This...
We have our best examples of giving in our Heavenly Father and His Son Jesus Christ.
God was willing to give up His Son, and Christ was willing to give up His own life!
Let us follow these great examples, and learn to give with a heart of love.
